High quality can be found among pines

Huntwick Forest's high-quality homes among the pines on the fringe of FM 1960 have earned it an enviable nickname.

"My wording for it is the 'Memorial of the Northwest' but a lot less expensive," Heritage Texas Properties' Pamela Hughes says.

Gas street lamps cast a gentle glow on the upscale homes built mostly in the 1970s but as recently as 1996. The neighborhood shares characteristics with Memorial neighborhoods of the same age, with custom Tudor, English and traditional homes on ample size lots.

Prices range from $140,000 to $400,000, while sizes range from 2,500 square feet to twice that size for some newer ones.

April and Jay Barcello are part of a trend of second-generation homeowners returning to the neighborhood.

"Half of our street is retired couples, and the other half is young families that are moving in," April Barcello says.

Now parents of two young children, the Barcellos bought a home four blocks away from her parents' house in 1996. They enjoy amenities that include a racquet club, swimming and plenty of activities for all age groups, including empty nesters.

"Everything was not the same," Barcello says. "Everybody doesn't have floor plan A, B or C. All the homes are different."

Carolyn and Gene Bergeron liked the neighborhood so much that they bought the same house twice.

The couple originally moved to Huntwick after being transferred to Houston from Dallas in 1989. Their two-story Louisiana-style home with decorative ironwork had generous rooms and closet space.

They left in 1995 after another job transfer and then returned in 1999. When the builder tried to raise the price of a house where they planned to retire, they walked away from the deal.

"As it would happen, that week our old house went back on the market," Carolyn Bergeron recalls.

They moved quickly to buy it at a time when homes were often snatched up soon after going on the market.

But today, Bergeron notices the "for sale" signs stay up a little longer because there's more competition from new construction in the region.
